There still be another way to speed up your mobile loading time, by integrating AMP for your website especially if you are a publisher, or your company provides useful content to customers. This today article is about how to install AMP for wordpress website.
What is AMP? and How does it look like?
According to Google, Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) are an open-source initiative to provide web pages that load fast and look good on mobile devices, even over slow networks.
AMP only works on mobile and can be accessed through Google Search Result (photo)
Pros and Cons of AMP
The only advantage of AMP that we can easily see is improving your website mobile speed which can increase your website ranking.
I don’t want to mention other disadvantages of AMP, because in my opinion, they’re not credential. The only issue I concern is being unable to support third party scripts such as conversion tracking, live chat etc…
How to install AMP for WordPress?
First, you need to loggin to your WordPress Cpanel and install AMP Plugin for WordPress:
Now, the amp has been active, your post url will have 2 versions:
- Original url: https://www.hoapham.blog/install-amp-for-wordpress/
- AMP url: https://www.hoapham.blog/install-amp-for-wordpress/amp/
At the time I’m writing this article and testing this amp plugin, it seems that this plugin support only on post type, if you want to enable AMP on pages, you should install this AMP for WP – Accelerated Mobile Pages. However, as I mentioned before the downside of AMP is it does not support third party script excerpt Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager. If you’re using third party scripts such as chatbox (tawk.to, purechat…), call conversion tracking (whatconverts, callmetrics…) please consider carefully before enabling AMP for pages.
If you’re using Yoast SEO plugin, you will need to install and activate Glue for Yoast SEO & AMP plugin and make some configs.
Now, go to SEO – AMP and click on Design Tab
Upload the AMP icon (please search on Google) and default image. The default image will be used when posts doesn’t have a featured image. The dimension of image should be at least 696px in wide.
All done, but now you need to test your amp to make sure if it’s working fine. Please follow the instruction below:
Solution 1: AMP Test
- Visit https://search.google.com/test/amp
- Enter your amp url and click “run test”
opps, we get the error: Missing or Invalid structured data item.
Solution 2: Using Developer Console
Notice: This option is only available if you’re using Google Chrome browser.
Open you amp page on Google Chrome then add #development=1 to the url and refresh the page. Your url will look like this:
Press F12 button on your keyword to open Development Tool – and click on Console tab
Solution 3: Using AMP validator
Go to https://validator.ampproject.org/ and enter your amp url, mine is https://www.hoapham.blog/keyword-research-google-adwords/amp/
Click on Validate button on the right hand.
How to fix Missing or invalid structured data item in AMP?
Most of the time, this error is caused by lacking of logo. However, to identify what exactly caused the issue, please use Google Data Structure testing tool
Enter your amp page and click Run Test
To fix the “A value for the logo field is required” error, we just need to update the favicon for your website.
Go to Appearance – Customize – Site Identity
Scroll down and upload the site icon. This icon will be displayed on browser tab and bookmark bars. Please keep in mind the dimension of the icon should be at least 512×512
Click Publish to update the change
Now go back to Google Data Structure Testing Tool and check again.
